My Calling - Part 1
First of all, shout-out to my girl Bela! Thanks for asking me to be part of your blog.
This blog post is all about the calling of God and how my testimony gave me a passion for young people.
Isn’t it just amazing that God will trust us to be his disciples and find more disciples. Like, just think about this for a moment: the Creator of the universe, who can do all things, wants to use you and me to love people using our various gifts and talents!
What is the calling of God?
I think we tend to think that the call of God is just what our gifts or passions are BUT it’s so much more than that. As a Christian I believe that our number one calling is to follow Jesus
Luke 9:23 (NLT)
“Then he said to the crowd, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross daily, and follow me.”
This is what we are called to do - pick up our cross daily and follow Jesus. That is the ultimate call for our lives. God has called us to follow Jesus and then make disciples and love people in different unique ways. I think it’s amazing that someone who is called to preach is just as important as someone who is called to build the church financially with a business. Different talents but one mission to build God’s church and to make disciples.
I grew up going to church with my amazing mum (my dad isn’t a Christian). When I was 6 years old my family moved from Zimbabwe to Australia to a little city called Newcastle in New South Wales. When I was just about to start high school, my dad got transferred to Perth in Western Australia for work which means my whole family had to move. Two months in a brand new city, with no friends and just about to become a teenager, my parents divorced. It had to be one of, if not the most heartbreaking thing I’ve ever experienced because all I knew was my dad being at home so the fact that I wouldn’t be seeing my dad anymore at home was different.
So I ended up blaming God. My mum used to force me to go to church (shoutout to mum because if it wasn’t for her I wouldn’t be where I am LOVE YOU MUMMA) every Sunday because she knew it was important for my little brother and I to be in church culture. My first three years of high school were pretty rough. I was failing school and didn’t have a relationship with God and on top of that I didn’t have a leader I could talk too about my parents' divorce.
When I started to discover the God-given desires…..
I remember attending a church conference and Pastor John Gray was preaching. He was talking on the power of your personal testimony and how what you have gone through can be used to help other people and I remember in that conference just saying to God “I don’t want any young person to go through what I’m going through alone” and that's when I felt God give me a heart and passion for young people. And from then on I’ve been on an amazing journey and still go through some hard challenges but I know that God is calling me to do life with young people, to encourage them and tell them that the situations they face now God can use to change other people's lives.
Romans 11:29 (NLT)
“For God’s gifts and his call can never be withdrawn.”
I will love to end on this - God’s love for us is so crazy we don’t realize just how gracious He is. There is nothing that we can do to separate God’s love from us and our gifts. If you are reading this and not sure what God is calling you to do my advice is to seek Him and pray and also look at what makes you righteously angry or breaks your heart. For me, I know that seeing young people not in church and feeling excluded hurts me. I take that hurt and I make sure that I talk to any young person who is by themselves and make them feel included and loved. Why? Because I could be the only Christian they meet!
LOVE THEM LIKE JESUS LOVED ME!
I hope you enjoyed reading this and hopefully it was encouraging. My prayer for anyone that reads this that isn’t sure about what their calling in life is that God will start speaking to you and stirring your heart for what breaks His.
And on another note……
